Hinterland Wine Company is a producer of premium sparkling wine in Prince Edward County, Ontario, the County’s only winery dedicated to sparkling wine. The company recently opened their winery to the public and have since received rave reviews but owners Jonas and Vicki don’t take all the credit for producing the wine, you have to thank the vines and soil they are planted in! They claim that “the County of Prince Edward is perfectly suited for making sparkling wine. When we pick the grapes, we aim for an appropriate sugar level and acidity to make our base wine that will eventually go through a secondary ferment to product sparkling wine.” The result is perfect sugar and acid levels and grapes that have ripened slowly, adding a unique and complex flavour to the grapes.
Hinterland Wine has a cult like obsession with fans and is currently served at various locations across Toronto, at the Brookstreet Hotel in Ottawa, at Carriage House and East and Main in Prince Edward County, at Rundles in Stratford, Langdon Hall in Cambridge, Hockley Valley Resort in Orangeville and Taboo in Gravenhurst. They feature five different types of wine including the Riesling a great match with mid-weight meats and Halibut fish, Whitecap a tropical fruit and seashell on the nose that is a perfect fit with hors d’oeuvres, Ancestral the first time produced in Canada, this wine is made from Gamay noir grapes from the County and is an excellent desert wine, the Rosé Sparkling made in the traditional method, this fresh and zesty wine is made with 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay (new vintage coming soon), and the latest edition Les Etoiles a standout pinot noir that smells of dried cherry, peach and almond (new vintage coming soon).
